Benefits of Natural, Grass-fed Foods

All natural farm fresh egg

“Feeding large quantities of grain to a grazing animal decreases the nutritional value of the food it produces.”

The major benefit of raising animals on pasture is that their meat is healthier for you. For example, compared to the meat originating from a feedlot, meat from a naturally grass-fed animal has less total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories. It also has more vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin C, and a number of health-promoting fats, including omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA (Source: www.eatwild.com).

“While grain-fed animals can grow twice as fast as grass-fed, it's at great cost to the health of the animals, the health of the planet, and the health of people.”

Ruminants were meant to eat grass. If you try to feed them grain exclusively, they put on weight quickly but their digestive systems become acidic and they often require antibiotics to keep them from getting sick. Grain-feeding results in meat that is high in unhealthy fats, low in healthy fats, and low in critical nutrients. And, while grain-fed animals can grow twice as fast as grass-fed, it's at great cost to the health of the animals, the health of the planet, and the health of people.

Raising natural, grass-fed foods is an environmentally conscious approach to food production. In a confinement operation the animals deposit large amounts of manure in a small space. The major environmental impacts of these feed lots are ground and surface water contamination and soil overloading. Conversely, on pasture-based farms, the manure is distributed over a large area and instead of a pollution problem it becomes a valuable source of natural fertilizer.

When you choose to eat natural foods, you are promoting the welfare of the animals, helping small-scale ranchers and farmers achieve sustainability, being environmentally conscious and giving your family the healthiest possible food.
